IN STOCK NOW ... I am delighted to announce that the Flytying Boutique has embarked on a
Whitetail Fly Tieing is owned and operated by Chris Helm. It was born of the necessity for Chris to have materials available for his many fly tying classes. With 30+ years experience in tying and his extensive knowledge of fly tying materials, Chris is known throughout the World for his expertise in all aspects of deer hair. Many fly tiers experience a great deal of frustration when working with hair. Much of the problem is caused by not having the correct type of hair for the fly that is being tied. Because there are so many types of hair such as whitetail, mule deer, three types of elk hair, caribou, antelope, moose etc., this confusion is not hard to understand. Chris found himself in this position 25 years ago. He began processing his own hides and this has given him a much better understanding of deer hair. This informal research has led to working with other types of hides to gain a broader understanding of all the hair used in fly tying.
One problem with whitetail deer hair is that every hide is slightly different from the next. When Chris cut the hides, he grades each piece of hair and sorts it by type for specific uses. All of the packs include a label indicating the type of hair and its recommended uses. Please do remember that some hair can be used to tie a number of different patterns.
