Fom the Flymen Company of the USA come the EVOLUTION™ MAYFLY TUNGSTEN BEADHEADS - SWIMMER & BURROWER.
These are really exciting!
These MAYFLY S/B "beadheads" have been designed with the right size, proportion, shape and colours (brown, black and olive), allowing you to tie very realistic mayfly swimmer / burrower style nymph patterns.
Mayfly swimmers ( AGILE DARTERS) are torpedo shaped swimmer nymphs that are streamlined and resemble tiny minnows as they dart amongst the bottom vegetation and debris. Swimmers can swim upstream against strong current without a problem. Others inhabit slower water and use their speed to dart between leaves in the weed beds.
The most common swimmer nymphs that we usually try to imitate are the numerous members of the blue-winged olive or Baetis group.
Mayfly burrower nymphs, as their name suggests, make a habit of forming burrows within the bottom substrate. They are competent, confident swimmers that undulate their way toward the surface to emerge. Typically, most burrowers are unavailable to fly fishermen, but well known nymphs like the famous Hexagenia and eastern green drakes have prolific hatches.
